A Success Story

Manitoba First Nations used IC3 digital literacy training, like that included in Equi-Pass, to successfully engage young people in their community.  This gave the youth a new outlook on their career prospects, increased hope for the future, and gave the Elders enormous pride in their young people.  Listen to their story by watching the video.

First Nations Programs

Several First Nations Communities across Canada are using Equi-Pass to build community capacity.  The reason?  Equi-Pass can help communities that face unique challenges, many of which are applicable to First Nations.  They include:

Isolation - remote communities may not have the training resources to deliver necessary programs.  Equi-Pass' diverse course offerings allow many types of courses to be taken by users.

Lack of Local Opportunity - creating a culture of digital and skill literacy can help foster local business.  Entrepreneurs can use the learning portal to hone their business skills and grow their enterprises.  This can lead to job opportunities for the community at large.

A Need for Cultural Preservation - there is a great wealth of knowledge in Canada's Native communities.  Many Elders have precious knowledge and stories that can be captured in electronic format, thus preserving our country's history.  Empowering communities to embrace digital skills can help ensure that future Canadians can learn from this collective wisdom.

Program Sustainability - in uncertain times Government funding for local learning and skills programs can be cancelled.  The program sustainability options in Equi-Pass can allow communities to generate revenue, thus keeping learning programs alive.

Training and Professional Development Needs - Equi-Pass uses online technologies to show people how to use the learning system.  There is no need to leave home to learn; the learning comes to you!

Participation in 21st Century Society - Whether it's applying for a job, using Tele-health, accessing government services or completing school, most things require a certain level of computer familiarity.  The Equi-Pass program helps people get on the right side of the digital divide and allows communities to fully participate in the modern world.
